Turkish Conjunctions: hem ... hem de and de ... de

In this post, we’ll study the Turkish conjunctions hem ... hem de and de ... de. Both of them mean both ... and ... in English and can often be used interchangeably. However, their word order is different — and that’s the key point you’ll learn here! How? Keep reading!

We use hem ... hem de immediately before the words we join, while de ... de comes after them.

Compare these examples:

• Hem elbisen hem de ayakkabıların çok şık.

= Elbisen de ayakkabıların da çok şık.

→ Both your dress and your shoes are very elegant.

As can be seen, even though de is not a suffix, it harmonizes with the last vowel of the preceding word and becomes de or da.

• Hem Mehtap hem de kocası doktor.

= Mehtap da kocası da doktor.

→ Mehtap and her husband are both doctors.

• Özlem hem özel hayatında hem de iş hayatında çok başarılı bir insan.

= Özlem özel hayatında da iş hayatında da çok başarılı bir insan.

→ Özlem is a very successful person in both her personal and professional life.

• Hem İngilizceyi hem de Fransızcayı ileri düzeyde biliyorum.

= İngilizceyi de Fransızcayı da ileri düzeyde biliyorum.

→ I know both English and French at an advanced level.
