In this post, we’ll learn how to use the Turkish question words hangi, hangisi, and hangileri — all meaning which (one/ones) in different forms.
1. Question Word: Hangi
Hangi means which.
In subject questions (questions where the noun is the subject of the verb), it can be used before singular or plural nominative nouns, but it is always followed by a singular verb.
Examples:
A: Hangi kız kardeşin evleniyor?
→ Which of your sisters is getting married?
B: Küçük kız kardeşim.
→ My younger sister.
A: Hangi ofis Selin Hanım'ın?
→ Which office is Ms. Selin's?
B: Sağdaki.
→ The one on the right.
A: Hangi çocuklar sana zorbalık yapıyor?
→ Which kids are bullying you?
B: Şu siyah tişörtlüler.
→ Those in black T-shirts.
In other types of questions (questions where the noun is not the subject, such as object questions or directional questions), the noun (person or thing) that follows hangi takes the case suffix required by the verb.
Examples:
A: Akşam hangi filme gidelim?
→ Which film shall we go to in the evening?
B: Sen seç.
→ You choose.
A: Hangi elbiseyi alacaksın?
→ Which dress will you buy?
B: Kırmızıyı.
→ The red one.
A: Hangi üniversiteden mezun oldunuz?
→ Which university have you graduated from?
B: Marmara Üniversitesi’nden.
→ From Marmara University.
Notice: The answers have the same case suffix as the nouns in the questions.
2. Question Word: Hangisi
Hangisi means which one. The suffix -si replaces the noun that comes after hangi — just like the English one. In subject questions, hangisi is used in the nominative case.
Examples:
A: Hangi elbiseyi alacaksın?
→ Which dress will you buy?
B: Karar veremiyorum. Sence hangisi güzel?
→ I can't decide. Which one do you think is more beautiful?
A: Sistemde iki adresiniz var. Hangisi güncel?
→ You have two addresses in the system. Which one is up to date?
B: Ankara adresim.
→ My Ankara address.
In other types of questions, hangisi takes the case suffix required by the verb.
Examples:
A: Hangi elbiseyi alacaksın?
→ Which dress will you buy?
B: Sence hangisini alayım?
→ Which one do you think I should buy?
A: İki adresiniz var. Kargoyu hangisine gönderelim?
→ You have two addresses. Which one should we send the package to?
B: Ankara adresime.
→ To my Ankara address.
3. Question Word: Hangileri
Hangileri is the plural of hangisi. It is used in the same way as hangisi, but it refers to more than one person or thing.
Examples:
A: O çocuklardan hangileri sana zorbalık yapıyor?
→ Which of those kids are bullying you?
B: Siyah tişörtlüler.
→ Those in black T-shirts.
A: Hangi ayakkabıları alacaksın?
→ Which shoes will you buy?
B: Sence hangilerini alayım? Hangileri çantamla iyi gider?
→ Which ones do you think I should buy? Which ones go well with my handbag?
