Turkish Suffix -mesine rağmen

We use -mesine rağmen (or -mesine karşın) to form although clauses in Turkish.

The suffix -mesine inflects for person, as shown in the example below. The final -a is the dative case suffix, which is required by rağmen/karşın.

1 yapmama  rağmen/karşın	1 yapmamıza rağmen/karşın
2 yapmana  rağmen/karşın	2 yapmanıza  rağmen/karşın
3 yapmasına  rağmen/karşı	3 yapmalarına  rağmen/karşın

Examples:

• Bilmene rağmen bana hiçbir şey söylemedin. Söylemen gerekirdi. Hayal kırıklığına uğrattın beni.

→ Even though you knew it, you didn’t tell me anything. You should have. You have disappointed me.

• Ben hiçbir şey yapmamama karşın öğretmen o çocuklarla beni de cezalandırdı.

→ Although I did nothing, the teacher punished me too along with those children.

• Onlar uzun zamandır birlikte yaşamalarına rağmen evlenmeyi düşünmüyorlar.

→ They aren’t thinking of getting married although they have been living together for a long time.

• Bizim arabamız oldukça eski olmasına karşın bize pek bir sorun çıkarmıyor, çok şükür.

→ Although our car is quite old, it doesn’t cause much trouble for us, fortunately.

In addition to verbal forms, we can also use rağmen or karşın after nouns and pronouns in the dative case to mean “despite” or “in spite of” (+ noun).

Examples:

• Onlar ekonomik sorunlarına karşın gayet mutlu görünüyorlar. Nasıl? Anlamıyorum.

→ In spite of their financial problems, they seem quite happy. How? I don’t understand.

• Babam ileri yaşına karşın hâlâ haftanın beş günü çalışıyor. 80’ine (seksenine) merdiven dayadı.

→ My father still works five days a week despite his advanced age. He is pushing 80 (lit, propped a ladder).

• Leyla anne ve babasının itirazlarına rağmen o adamla evleneceğini söylüyor. Demek ki çok seviyor.

→ Leyla says she will marry that man despite her parents’ objections. She must love him very much.

• Bizim arabamız bayağı eski ama buna rağmen şu anda kadar bize pek bir sorun çıkarmadı, neyse ki.

→ Our car is quite old, but despite that, it hasn’t caused much trouble for us so far, fortunately.
